“Qasim worked as a Student Software Developer in my Infrastructure Team on a project to unify the tools used to support the internal development processes. During this placement role he helped to manage a number of requirements and developed several utilities to support this aim. What I recognised instantly was Qasim’s approach and ability to understand the problem or task at hand quickly and being able to use his own initiative to work to a solution and was not afraid to seek assistance when he needed to. Qasim’s is also an excellent communicator and was confident at holding meetings which included all the Development and Test Managers, providing clear updates and prioritising requests. Qasim easily demonstrated enough in the short placement for me to offer him a permanent position at the end of his University course and I look forward to welcoming him back into the team.”

This was a 3rd year project which involved close collaboration between Fastbleep Schools and the University of Manchester (Computer Science and Medicine departments). The work was carried out over six months, starting in October 2012. It involved working with individuals from all levels within the Fastbleep organisation including James Giles, CEO and Founder; Elspeth Hill, Executive Chair and Founder; Suzanne Vaughan, Head of Research; Akhil Lakhani, Fastbleep Schools Lead and Fastbleep medical student volunteers.
Q sort proved to be an enjoyable, engaging and successful way to stimulate discussions with young people and challenge their misconceptions about careers in Medicine. It has great potential to be adapted for use in similar widening participation schemes across other disciplines. Quantitative analysis techniques revealed similarities between viewpoints of school pupils and medical students. Observational data highlighted the fun and enjoyable aspect of Q sort, as well as the usefulness as a teaching aid for adaptive teaching.
The project will be presented to the wider Medical Education community at the international AMEE conference in Prague during summer 2013. As a result of this work, the Fastbleep Schools process was changed and it has opened up opportunities for future collaborative work in this area. An academic paper based on this work is being prepared together with Suzanne Vaughan (Fastbleep Researcher), Akhil Lakhani (Fastbleep Schools Lead) and my supervisor Prof. Andy Brass (School of Computer Science, University of Manchester).Other creators
